RIW Summer Intern Recap

As we wrap up the summer at RIW, we want to spotlight the hard work and achievements of our fantastic interns, Suffolk University Law School students Natasha Abrams and Connor Lewis. They arrived enthusiastic and eager to learn and have gained valuable experience over the last few months. Before they head back to the classroom this fall, they shared some takeaways from their time with the firm:

Why did you choose RIW for your summer?

I was extremely excited to be interning at RIW this summer because it is a reputable Boston-based business law firm with a broad range of practice areas that are closely aligned with my career interests. RIW has provided me with the invaluable opportunity to gain practical experience in business law and experience working at a firm.  It was wonderful getting to know the great staff at RIW, and I have really appreciated the mentorship throughout the summer.

Tell us about some of the interesting matters you’ve worked on while at RIW.

At RIW this summer, I worked on a wide variety of assignments in various practice areas. Working with different attorneys in the litigation and corporate departments, I prepared documents and assisted with case preparation. Throughout the summer, my role involved research and analysis on a broad range of legal issues. My work included drafting and reviewing many motions and discovery documents, as well as various contracts and lease agreements.

What was your favorite part of your summer at RIW?

My favorite part of interning at RIW was the opportunity to work closely with experienced attorneys while gaining a realistic perspective on practicing law. The welcoming and supportive environment at the firm made the learning process both enjoyable and insightful. Each day brought new challenges that allowed me to grow professionally, and I am continually inspired by the dedication and expertise of the attorneys at RIW.

What advice do you have for others who are taking on a summer associate role?

Be proactive and ask lots of questions! Don’t be shy about seeking new assignments and introducing yourself to people. Take advantage of the opportunity to learn from and work with accomplished attorneys, as well as the chance to explore different practice areas.

Why did you choose RIW for your summer?

Because of the variety of practice areas the firm offers. I had the pleasure of working on matters from litigation to banking to trust & estates. The real work experience I had in all of these areas helped me develop a diverse portfolio for my career which is the exact reason why I chose to work at RIW.

Tell us about some of the interesting matters you’ve worked on while at RIW.

There were a lot of interesting matters that I worked on this summer at RIW. I drafted pleadings in litigation matters and gained valuable litigation experience. I also worked on a time sensitive business transaction, which helped me learn to balance my time with other work. It was very interesting to see how complex it is for restaurants to close a deal on opening a new location. I gained experience with RIW’s banking group in a loan workout and general foreclosure matters. This experience in banking gave me a great appreciation for how detail oriented banking work is.  All of these projects gave me an inside look at what it’s like to work in different practices at RIW preparing me for my post law school career.

What was your favorite part of your summer at RIW?

My favorite part over the course of the summer here at RIW had to be networking and building connections with everyone. I was able to get to know every member of the staff on a professional and personal level. I gained invaluable advice and experience with the incredible staff here at RIW which I will carry with me for the rest of my professional career.

What advice do you have for others who are taking on a summer associate role?

One piece of advice that I have for anyone taking on a Summer Associate role would be to put yourself out there. These summer positions are what you make of it, so you have to try to go out and connect with attorneys in the office to make the most of your experience.  Definitely take advantage of the many talented and experienced attorneys, specifically at RIW, by putting yourself out there to work with them.
