Lauren recently joined RIW as a member of the firm’s Litigation Department where she represents companies and individuals primarily in the areas of commercial employment litigation and employment law.
Why did you become a lawyer?
I became a lawyer because I wanted to help people with their opportunities and problems, big or small.
Tell us about your career path.
After studying at the University of Maryland, College Park (Go Terps!), I worked in Massachusetts politics and state government for three years. There, I assisted the Governor of Massachusetts with implementing his agenda across the state’s 351 municipalities.
In 2013, I started at BC Law, where I interned with the litigation departments at the City of Boston and the US Attorney’s Office. I also participated in BC’s Civil Litigation Clinic, helping low-income families with housing and family court issues.
After law school, I began my litigation practice, which eventually led me to RIW.
Tell us about your practice.
As a litigator, I work on a variety of cases, from employment disputes such as wage and hour claims, discrimination claims, misclassification issues, and wrongful terminations to complex business disputes such as breach of contract claims, issues of fraud, shareholder demands, derivative claims, defamation, theft, and 93A claims.
As an advisor, I help individuals and businesses navigate all kinds of issues. I have advised employers on employee handbooks, medical leave issues, and terminations, including reductions in force. I have also advised individuals on how to navigate potential terminations or assisted in negotiating severance agreements.
What do you love most about what you do?
What I love most is helping my clients. Not only do I enjoy advocating for them in court, in briefs, or in conferences with counsel, but I also love to assist my clients in understanding the complicated legal landscape of business so they can better advocate for themselves on a daily basis.
Why did you choose the firm?
I chose RIW because of the people. An attorney is only as strong as the team they are on, and the team at RIW understands how to support one another professionally and personally.
Tell us a fun or surprising fact about you.
I know how to track leopards! When on safari in Botswana, I learned how to track them using the intersection of a leopard’s paw prints with those of a beetle. That trick guided us to a mother and her cub and resulted in some great photos.
What do you do in your free time?
I enjoy traveling near and far. That includes travel to far-off places (like leopard tracking in Africa) to the beaches and mountains of New England to ski, swim, and boat. I’ve also been known to binge-watch a TV show or two.
